Feeling stuck? Stop comparing your life to other peoples' social media highlight reel - or you'll never get anything done.
Social media is fantastic for forming connections, zoning out, or building a business, but it is the worst possible thing for the Comparison Monster, and the lack of productivity that the CM brings with it. It is especially difficult if you are already going through a difficult time in your life, and you don't have the brain strength to consciously realize the person you are comparing your life/business/relationship/whatever to, is probably not as awesome as you perceive it to be.
For a LONG time I was unable to move forward on ANYTHING because I saw other people being successful and moving forward, and I felt stuck. Quite honestly, I started being a little obsessive.
The little voice in my head was usually rambling on about 1 of 2 things:
1) I will never be that good. Why am I even trying?
2) I should be the one talking about that! Why are they getting to do that and not me??
As this voice went on and ONNNN, I was completely unable to move ahead because I was busy comparing myself to others, and berating myself for not being good enough. This could have been in my grief, my business, my writing, my speaking, my personal life. It did not matter. Somehow I was not good enough, and I'd let myself know it. I'd wake up from some sort of weird daze, and realize I haven't gotten anything done in 3 hours. Or 3 days. And then I would be even madder at myself.
Sound familiar? Maybe you understand this.
Looking for things on social media that inspire us is one thing - obsessing about the things other people are creating or accomplishing is another.
Do you need to un follow someone in your line of work? Or someone in a new relationship? Or who is pregnant? Or wherever you are "stuck" (or feel stuck even if you aren't...) in your life.
Be good to yourself and hit the snooze button on their updates. It is ok! And it is way better for your mental health. They won't even notice you're gone. I promise.
Be gentle with yourself and give yourself grace! Life is too short to get bogged down in what others are doing well - or not well. In all honesty, you may not (and probably ARE not) seeing what is the reality in their life. Social media is simply what we choose to show people. We are literally being served a highlight reel of peoples' lives.
Why waste your time with jealousy and comparison over what you see online, when truthfully, reality may be way less than ideal?
Getting bogged down in the comparisons uses energy that could be used to move you to a better place emotionally and financially.
I love this quote, because it is 100% true:
“Comparison drives you to the dead end of your dream, your vision and your destiny.”
― Euginia Herlihy
Being distracted by the Comparison Monster keeps you stagnant, and keeps you from fulfilling your higher purpose. You are awesome, you are an individual, and you are here on this planet to do great things.
